Today I’m awash in rewrites and edits. So much so that I didn’t have time to throw together and Mythos Monday post (naughty author), but I came across this really interesting blog post about the Walking Dead and Modern Zombie Mythology by a man named Shawn Griffiths. It’s a great post and I’m sure you’re all going to find it interesting. What are your thoughts on TWD?

  1. Hey, Shea… I love The Walking Dead.. I do a post about it every Thursday called “The Walking Dead Chow Down.”
I disagree that it is anything like Survivor. I mean, sure the characters are trying to survive in a post apocalyptic world, but on the flip side of that, they are doing their best to try to have some semblance of a normal life.
Plus, on Survivor.. I don’t think there is the potential threat of Zombies? And like you said, Survivor is “reality tv.”

  2. I don’t know that I have a nice way to put this and my view may be over-stated, but Survivor … and much of reality tv … is (or is treated as) an opportunity for viewers to batten and feed off the lives of others. Except we aren’t really ‘feeding’ off their lives … not their real lives. Just artificially constructed lives. Reality tv reduces the precious complexity of a human life and a human heart … to food.

Maybe all stories make their characters food for readers. 🙂 But zombie stories — at least the best ones — are about alerting us to the things that feed on us. Not just the dead. Racism (the second episode of The Walking Dead season 1 makes that point), our own fears (hello, Shane), our grief (hello, Herschel). The Walking Dead is about the things that feed on us, that will devour us if we permit them to. Zombie fiction of this kind is about training us to be survivors, by identifying and fighting the eaters.

Reality tv is not about watching survivors or training us to be survivors. Reality tv conditions us to be eaters, to be zombies. I love the way The Hunger Games criticizes reality tv and the way it works.

    My 2 cents.
